Why AUM ?

AUM clients are unemployed, working at low paying hourly jobs, disabled, elderly, sick, and homeless.  AUM clients are also families who until recently lived comfortably and were able to pay their bills on time. Now after losing jobs, sometimes for both parents, and depleting their savings, they now need help

Housing expenses are crippling many low income family budgets. Once a family is evicted or disconnected, the fees for utility reconnection or the deposit for another house/apartment can be insurmountable. Asking for help is difficult and embarrassing for many clients, especially when they have never had to ask for help before

Your financial donation is needed more than ever. With your help, more families will avoid home eviction. More children will retain an important stabilizing influence in their life, their neighborhood school. More senior and disabled citizens on fixed incomes will receive financial assistance for unusually high utility bills.

Imagine the difference your gift will make for Arlington's poor and disadvantaged. Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me--you did it to me.       Matthew 25:40

 AUM Stories

Tiffany, After more than ten years in a verbally and physically abusive relationship, Tiffany found the courage to leave her husband and begin a new life for herself and her children. With only a part-time job, it was difficult for Tiffany to make ends meet. Fortunately, she heard about AUMs emergency assistance program from her neighbor and called our office for help. AUM was able to pay the final portion of Tiffanys electric bill, as well as provide her with groceries and diapers. Tiffany inspired AUM with her courage and determination to make a better life for herself and her children.

Both Tom and Cindy are employed, but at low paying hourly wages. Each month they manage to pay all their bills, but there is never any money left to put into savings. Last month, Cindy was ill and then their 8-year old son also became ill; consequently, she missed a week of work. With no savings to rely on, they were unable to pay all of next months rent.

Cindy called the United Way 2-1-1 Helpline for assistance and was referred to AUM. With help from our supporters, AUM was able to pay the final portion of their rent and keep this deserving family safely in their apartment.                              Read more AUM Stories
