Breaking the cycle of poverty, one family at a time!

Arlington Urban Ministries announces its fourth annual “Doing Good in the Neighborhood Award.” This award honors junior and senior high school students who demonstrate an active interest in bettering their community and the lives of others around them.

Honorees  will be students who have embraced volunteerism and are committed to giving back to their community beyond what is required of other service organizations, i.e. Key Club, National Honor Society.  Extracurricular activities will be considered; however, the volunteer service of the Honoree must speak for itself.

Applications will be reviewed and the Honorees selected by the Arlington Urban Ministries Award Selection Committee. Honorees must be present at AUM’s fundraiser dinner, Boots, Chaps & Cowboy Hats on April 10, 2016 to be recognized for their outstanding service. Each Honoree will receive two complimentary tickets to the event.

Amy's story......

Amy came into our office feeling hopeless, her husband was disabled with lung problems after working for nearly 20 years in a facility that has since been closed and torn down.  His doctors believe he was likely exposed to asbestos, as his lung damage is extremely severe.  He has never smoked a cigarette, and yet, has difficulty simply taking a breath.  He uses a machine to assist with breathing at night, when he sometimes has panic attacks from his symptoms, and his doctor now believes he requires a breathing machine during the day as well. Needless to say, the electricity used by these machines is very expensive.  In addition to helping her pay this bill, our caseworker was also able to provide this client with contact information at her electric company so that, due to the medical situation of her husband, the electricity would not be cut off.
